Sourcing

Sourcing is a main role of the apparel export merchandiser and they have total responsibility for sourcing decisions. There is a complex interrelationship between style development, fabric sourcing, and accessories sourcing. Sustainability and social responsibility are also important factor in sourcing and the merchandiser has knowledge of,

where to source?

How to source?

What to source?

Sourcing can be done in three ways,

  1. Domestic sourcing

  2. International sourcing

  3. Both domestic and international sourcing

In apparel export industry, fabric and accessory sourcing is an important as well as critical function.

There are the two types of accessories,

1. Product accessories

2. Packing accessories

Product accessories are an integral part of the garment like yarn or fabric, sewing thread, rib, elastic, embroidery, dyeing, printing, lace etc…

Packing accessories are accessories used while packing and some of them are labels, tags, zippers, hangers, poly bag, carton box, barcode sticker, header card, insert card etc…

The cost will be differing between the buyer and the exporter or merchandiser while sourcing & purchasing the accessories. If the exporter sources the accessories they will add material cost, overhead cost and profit and this will be costlier because they have to source and import. It takes long time and also need an approval from the buyer.

If the buyer nominates the accessory supplier the price will be low, no approval and standard quality, uniformity and ready stock
